Why We Use Silk Instead of Satin

Silk and satin often look similar to the eye, and they are often mistaken as they are similar to the touch as well. But they are distinctly different fabrics, and Clù has a definite preference for one.

Satin emulates the “silk look” due to the specific weaving technique that is used to weave the fabric so closely together to creates one side with a shiny, glossy finish and a dull underside. While often satin contains threads of silk, it is comprised of numerous other materials: cotton, nylon and polyester. Ultimately, the combination of fibers result in the fabric's lacking breathability. Because of the mixed threads, it is prone to snag and cause ripples. On the upside, its composition of stitched non-natural fibers make satin quite affordable and versatile for projects compared to its elevated counterpart, silk.

Silk is a 100% pure, natural fabric comprised of silkworms’ cocoon fiber and woven into a fabric that is protein-based. This makes it extremely breathable and comfortable, not to mention soft to the touch. The fabric is shiny and glossy on both sides which gives an all-over luxurious feel along with strength and elasticity. It is an isothermal fabric, which means depending on the temperature – it will work with you. In cool temperatures, it will retain your body heat; and, in warmer temps, it won't overhwelm. Silk is moisture absorbent, antibacterial and non-irritating – even to sensitive skin. With its rich past and almost mythical origins, this fabric is synonymous with luxury.

Clù works exclusively with silk for these reasons. While satin may be affordable and even more practical in some ways, the timelessness of silk pairs with the artistic content on our designs. When you feel this fabric draped around your neck or shoulders, or wrapped around your head, you feel its iconic smoothness and vibrate with its ageless elegance.
